Biography

Grace (Long) Larkin was born in Oklahoma.

Grace Cordelia Long was the youngest of the twelve Long children born in 1914 to Alvin Porter and Phoebe Palestine Morris Long. She was born and raised on the land her parents had gotten from the landrun for the Cherokee Strip. Grace married Francis Marcoux in 1936. This marriage ended in a divorce in Dec 1945, shortly after he came home from WWII. Francis died in 1948. Grace was always very sweet, and she especially loved animals. She and her second husband Ethan Allen "Jiggs" Larkin loved dogs, cats and birds, and they always had several. Grace always had a dog that was like a child to her. Grace and Jiggs did not have any human children, but their pets were their children.

Grace went to Wichita when so many people were going there to help in the war effort in the early 1940’s. When she got to Wichita, she let her sister Nora know that she needed a job. Nora told her that the only job that she knew about was working in one of the clubs where the soldiers came in, and she could serve drink and talk to the soldiers. Grace told Nora that she was too shy and could not do that kind of a job. Nora said there was no choice, so Grace took the job and was soon the most popular young woman working there. She and Jiggs met in Wichita, and they made a home together on 2nd Street in Wichita.

Grace Long Larkin, age 91

Grace was very pretty, and when she was 91 she still had the most beautiful completion, and she was as sharp and quick witted as she had always been. Grace is buried in Wichita with her husband.

Aunt Grace always had a little dog that she loved. When I was a child she was heartbroken over the death of her little dog, and it likely is the same one she is photographed with. Grace went to bed and decided that she wanted to die also. My aunt Nora went to see about Grace, and Nora was supposed to take care of Grace’s birds. Nora decided it was time for Grace to get out of bed, so she let the birds out of their cages, and they were flying about the house. Grace realized that the birds were out, and they could get outside if someone opened a door to the outside. Grace begged Nora to get the birds back in their cages. Nora absolutely refused, so Grace got out of bed and was able to get the birds safely back. Once Grace had to run about her home, she returned to her regular life and decided to not try to die.
