Hannah Lockhart was born about 1831 in Castleblayney, Muckno, which was part of Ulster in Ireland. She was the daughter of Robert Lockhart, a boot maker, and Hannah Ligate.
In 1841 she was recorded with the family of the man she later married, Peter Dickson, his wife Ann and their son Robert at Porter Street Walker's Building, Liverpool, Lancashire, England[1]. Why she was there has not yet been discovered. Was she related to either Ann or Peter?
Although the child was registered under the name of Dickson, Hannah and Peter had not yet married when he was born.
She married Peter Dickson at St Luke, Liverpool on 10 September 1849[4]. It is strange that the wrong spelling was used for this marriage by Peter as a child was registered with the correct spelling just two months before. Four children were born in Liverpool but only one survived.
Hannah (Lockhart) Dickson migrated from United Kingdom to Colony of Victoria.
Peter (a carpenter aged 35), Hannah (25) and young Peter then emigrated to the Colony of Victoria on the Eagle which left Liverpool in July 1856[13]. There they lived in Williamstown and had several more children.
Hannah (Lockhart) Dickson migrated from Colony of Victoria to New Zealand.
Peter Junior emigrated to New Zealand in the late 1870s. Her husband died in 1880. Her second living son, Thomas, and his new wife, Margaret, followed in 1882. Later that year the remaining daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, and Hannah also emigrated to New Zealand on the SS Manapouri which left Melbourne on 22 November 1882[20]. The ship sailed via Hobart, Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton and then Wellington, where they disembarked. From there they travelled to Wanganui.
In 1899 she was listed on the Pātea Supplementary No 1 Electoral Roll doing domestic duties and living in Pātea[21] with her daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law William Barr.
Hannah lived long enough to see all the children born to Thomas and Margaret including the next Peter who also took her name of Lockhart as his middle name. He in turn gave that middle name to four of his five children.
Hannah died on 16 November 1903[22] at Pātea. She was buried in the Old Wanganui Cemetery (Heads Road Old Cemetery), Wanganui[23]. Years later in 2024, her two great grand-daughters, daughters of her grandson Peter, arranged for her gravestone to be restored.
Research Notes
No record of Hannah and Peter has been found for the 1851 Census. It is possible that they were travelling in Ireland or Scotland at the time.
