Biography

Jack Lockett was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

John Henry Lockett was born in 1891 at or about Waanyarra in the Colony of Victoria. He was the son of Mary Lockett.

In World War I, Private John Henry Lockett enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), on the 24th of March 1916 at the age of 25 years. A resident of Linga in Victoria, and his Next of Kin was listed as his mother, Mrs Mary E Burstall of Tarnagulla, Victoria. Private Lockett was assigned to the 38th Battalion, D Company. And this unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A54 Runic on 20 June 1916. Later, now Sergeant Lockett, he served with the 38th Battalion and commenced his return to Australia on the 19th of June 1919 on the Miltiades. After seeing active service on the Western Front, and rising through the ranks from Private to Sergeant as an exemplary soldier, he was eligible for the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Jack Lockett is an Anzac who served in World War One.

In 1923 Jack Lockett married Mabel (Maybell) Victoria Ingwersen known as Molly. They were married for 58 years until Dolly passed away in August 1981, aged 84.

Jack Lockett was awarded the French Legion of Honour, known as the Chevalier (Knight) of the Légion d'honneur, in July 1998 at the age of 107 years. He was awarded it for his service in World War I in France.

In the final few years of his extraordinary life, Jack Lockett also received the following honours:

He passed away in May 2002 at the age of 111 years, 123 days at the Mount Alvernia Hospital in Bendigo. He was laid to rest at the Bendigo Public Cemetery, Bendigo, Victoria. He was survived by four children: Jack, Kevin, Joyce, and Ron; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty-four great-grandchildren. He was notably Australia's oldest verified male at that time.
