James' mother died in England in August 1885 and his father and five of his siblings emigrated from England to New Zealand.
James travelled to South Africa where he died as a result of a mining accident on 4 July 4 1912 in Boksburg, Transvaal, at the age of 50[3].
Intended place of burial was Benoni Cemetery.
Sadly his widow Eva died six months later on 14 January 1913 at the age of 47 and two of his sons would go on to perish in the 1st World War.
In the 1891 Australia census he was probably in the Gold Mining town of Silverton, New South Wales, Australia. (Note: This could not be "our" James as he gave his age on the census as 56 which would have him born in 1835, whereas he was born in 1862. Ellen McDonald)
