Biography

Leoluca lo Bello is born 17 July 1865 in Corleone and baptized the next day. He is the son of Emmanuele lo Bello and Rosa Palermo. His godparents are Filippo Jovino and Maria Palermo, a married couple.[1]

Leoluca marries his third cousin Maria Carmela Castro, daughter of Antonino Castro and Maria di Miceli, on 7 November 1891. This marriage record contains reference to a dispensation due to fourth degree consanguinity obtained in October 1891 (the date is not completed) from Monreale.[2][3]

Leoluca and Carmela have one child, Rosa (1893).

On 31 January 1893 in Corleone, Leoluca Lo Bello, age 27 (b. 1865), borgese, resident of Corleone, reports the birth on 27 January of a baby to his wife, Maria Carmela Castro, in their home at via Rua del Piano, #6. The baby is a girl and is named Rosa. Witnesses are Nicolo’ Governali, age 40 (b. 1852), contadino, and Antonino Nuccio, age 35 (b. 1857), murifabbro.[4]

Rosa is baptized on 2 February. Her godfather is Luciano Gariffo, who is unmarried.[5]

On the manifest of the Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm, sailing from Palermo via Naples and arriving on 17 October 1894 in Ellis Island. All passengers are going to New Orleans.

Note: Leoluca has a first cousin, once removed of the same name who emigrates to New York City by 1888.

In 1896, Rosa's godfather, Luciano Gariffo, marries Leoluca's sister, Maria Antonina lo Bello.

Leoluca and his family live in New Orleans from 1895-1906, according to a notation on the manifest of the Pannonia, in 1907.

In 1898, Tommaso Mangiameli joins his "uncle" Leoluca in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. That same year, Leoluca's wife makes a trip to New York from Palermo with her mother and sister.

On the SS Pannonia departing Palermo on 22 October 1907 and arriving in New York on 9 November 1907:

All three born in Corleone. They are joining Mr. Giuseppe Castro (Carmela's brother) at 2538 Amsterdam Av., New York.[7]

In the 1910 federal census of NYC taken 27 April, Louis Lobello, 44 (b.1866), heads a household at 2513 Amsterdam Av with his wife of 17 years, Carmela, 39 (b. 1871). It is the first marriage for them both. She has had one child, living. Their daughter, Rosa, 16 (b. 1894), lives with them. All three born in Italy and emigrated in 1908. Louis is a baker with his own shop.[8]

In 1913, Leoluca's sister Maria Antonina, her husband Luciano, and their son emigrate, joining Luciano's brother-in-law Salvatore lo Bello at 2515 Amsterdam Av.

Leoluca LoBello declares his intention to petition for US citizenship. He is 49 years old, a baker, white, fair complexion, 5’4”, 167#, gray hair, brown eyes, born in Palermo on 17 July 1865, lives at 2515 Amsterdam Av., NYC. Emigrated from Palermo on the Pannonia. Last foreign residence in Palermo. Arrived in the port of New York 9 November 1907. Sworn 20 May 1915. Leoluca signs his own name.[9]

Leoluca Lo Bello petitions for naturalization. He lives at 2515 Amsterdam Av., NYC. He is a baker, born 17 July 1865 in Palermo. Emigrated from Palermo 20 October 1907 and arrived in New York on 7 November on the Pannonia. Declared his intention on 20 May 1915 in New York Supreme Court of New York County. He is married to Carmela, who was born 23 August 1870 in Palermo. She lives with him. He has one child, Rosie, 25 years old, born in Italy, lives in New York. Leoluca has lived in the US continuously from November 1907. He signs his name, 11 March 1919. Declaration of intention no. 112369. Certificate of Arrival no. 2307 d112369 filed 11 March 1919.

Witnesses are two real estate agents, Salvatore F. P. Dragotta, of 1624 Madison Ave., and John DiMiceli, of 20 E. 111th St., both in NYC. They sign their names on 11 March 1919.[10] John DiMiceli and Leoluca are married to second cousins.

Leoluca Lo Bello is admitted as a US citizen on 12 June 1919. Cert of naturalization 1268400 issued this day.[11][12]

In the 1930 federal census of Manhattan, taken 18 April, Luca Lo Bello, 64 (b. 1866), heads a household at 2494 Amsterdam Av. He owns his home, worth $13,000. With him are his wife, Carmela, 59 (b. 1871), and a lodger, Vincenzo Asturi, 55 (b. 1875), widower. Luca and Carmela first married when he was 26 and she was 21. All three born in Italy. Luca and Carmela emigrated in 1908 and their lodger in 1910. Luca is the proprietor of a grocery. Neither Carmela nor Vincenzo has an occupation.[13]


Death of Leoluca

Leoluca dies at the age of 78 in Manhattan, New York in July 1943. His occupation is listed as "storekeeper, retired" and his residence is listed as 505 West 183rd Street in New York, New York. He is buried on 26 July 1943 in Calvary Cemetery.[14]

Carmela dies at age 77 on 29 May 1948 in Staten Island, NYC. Her last address was 524 W. 184th St. NYC. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery.[15]
