Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

Joseph was born at Frodsham, Cheshire in about 1650.[1] His parents were called William and Elizabeth. His mother died in 1661 and his father in 1663. His father's will entrusted his upbringing to Joseph's older brother William.[2]

Joseph became a clockmaker, smith and gunsmith.[1][2]

Joseph married Hannah Williamson at Newton in the Forest Quaker Meeting House, Cheshire on 12 April 1687. The Quaker marriage record describes him as a gunmaker of Kingsley, Cheshire, and her as of Crewood Hall.[3] She was the daughter of John Williamson.[2] They had at least ten children,[2] including:

  • John, born at Kingsley, Cheshire on 5 January 1687/8 (Quaker 11th month 1687)[4]
  • Jacob, who also made clocks[1] and who was born at Kingsley, Cheshire on 19 September 1689[2][5]
  • Elizabeth, born at Frodsham, Cheshire on 10 July (Quaker 5th month) 1694[6]
  • Samuel, who was born in about 1698 - his age is given as about 5 years in the Quaker death and burial record - and who died on 31 May 1704 and was buried on 2 June at Newton Quaker burial ground[7]
  • Hannah, born on 23 June (Quaker 4th month) 1699[8]
  • Ester, born at Frodsham, Cheshire on 1 April (Quaker 2nd month) 1701[9]
  • Thomas, who was born at Frodsham, Cheshire on 11 January 1702/3 (Quaker 11th month 1702),[10] and who died there on 23 May (Quaker 3rd month) 1704 and was buried on 25 May at Newton Quaker burial ground, Cheshire[11]
  • Katherine/Catherine, who was born at Frodsham, Cheshire on 23 September (Quaker 7th month) 1704,[12] and who died on 19 March (Quaker 1st month) 1705 and was buried on 21 March at Newton Quaker burial ground, Cheshire: the Quaker death and burial record gives her age at death as 18 months[13]

Joseph moved back to Frodsham in about 1690 and then to Preston on the Hill, Cheshire.[1]

Joseph died on 23 April (Quaker 2nd month) 1721 and was buried on 26 April at Newton Quaker burial ground, Cheshire. The Quaker death and burial record gives his age as 70, pointing to a birth year of about 1651.[14][15]

Joseph's wife survived him, dying at Frodsham, Cheshire on 19 January 1724 (Quaker 11th month 1723): she was buried at Newton Quaker burial ground on 21 January. Her age is given as about 65 in the Quaker death and burial record.[16]
