The Legend

A woman named Juliana Little, born in 1595 to Francis (or Frances) Little, was the wife of John Sutton, of Attleborough, Norfolk County, England, was the mother of his children, and crossed the Atlantic with him to settle in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1]

Popularity of the Legend

A search on the internet for combinations such as "Juliana Little" and "Attleborough" produces multiple references at large numbers of personal genealogies, as well as such locations as:

No source has been found which refers Juliana Little back to any source that provides primary documentation such as parish baptismal records, wills, and other records.

Some researchers say she was Juliana Little, born in 1595 in England to Frances (or Francis) Little but we have no supporting data.[2]

Characteristics of the Legend: Multiple Errors

A record purveyed by Ancestry.com offers this information:

  • Juliana Little was born 1595 in Massachusetts, married John Sutton, born 1593 in Massachusetts and they married in 1617 in Massachusetts. [3]

All of these Massachusetts events are alleged to have taken place years before the arrival of the Mayflower in 1620 and the beginnings of European settlement!
