Biography

Not much is known about Charles as he passed away in the 1940s. According to family lore, Charlie received a scratch which became septic leading to his death. Afterwards, Evelyn struggled to raise their three boys and as this was a time of great hardship for the family it was never talked about. On August 2nd 1917 Charles and two childhood friends sailed from Nassau to New York city on the SS Monterey. The passenger manifest gives their reason for entering the United States as being in transit to Canada to enlist in the British army. Then in 1918 Charles was working for the South Florida Energy and Construction Company when he registered for the draft. He was not accepted due to his poor vision. Charles' son Allison recalled that his dad built the boys a small wooden punt which they enjoyed rowing over to Hog Island where they fished and looked for bird eggs. His eldest son Reg, remembered their dad taking them to visit the Keeper of the Hog Island Lighthouse, a Mr. Hall who may have been a relative of their mother Evelyn.
