John Lepage was born ion 2 January 1886 in Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts. He was the son of Jean Baptiste Lepage and Marceline Ouellette.[1][2]
During World War I, John served in the United States Military. Following this tour of duty, John volunteered with the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles also known as the "Quebec Regiment"[3]. His service number was 110315.
Private Lepage was killed in action on 30 October 1917 while serving with the Canadian Mounted Rifles in Belgium.[4] His death has been commemorated with an engraving of his name on Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium.[5]. This memorial is located at the eastern side of the town of Ypres (now Leper) in the Province of West Flanders, on the road to Menin and Courtrai. It bears the names of 55,000 men who were lost without trace during the defence of the Ypres Salient in the First World War.[6]. The Commonwealth Graves Commission goes on to say:
"The dead are remembered to this day in a simple ceremony that takes place every evening at 8:00 p.m. All traffic through the gateway in either direction is halted, and two buglers (on special occasions four) move to the centre of the Hall and sound the Last Post. Two silver trumpets for use in the ceremony are a gift to the Ypres Last Post Committee by an officer of the Royal Canadian Artillery, who served with the 10th Battery, of St. Catharines, Ontario, in Ypres in April 1915."[7]
John's sacrifice has also been honored on page 274 in the World War I Canadian Book of Remembrance located in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa, Canada. The page featuring John's name is displayed on 17 June each year.[8]
Notre Dame de la Visitation, his home church in Fall River, erected a monument in the memory of all soldiers slain in the Great War. John's mother, Marceline Ouellette unveiled the statue in a ceremony on 13 October 1920.[9]
