Obituary
Ilda Northern, a longtime community activist who cofounded the "Watchful Eye Neighborhood Watch of Roosevelt" in 1983 with her late husband, Alfred "Jack" Northern, has died at age 85.
She died peacefully on Feb. 26 at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Edison, N.J., her family said. No cause of death was given.
Northern worked for more than 30 years for the New York City Housing Authority. She retired in 1978 and devoted the rest of her life to community work, according to her niece, Dr. Barbara League Velazquez of Maplewood, N.J.
Alfred Northern died in 1994. They had no children.
After retiring, she received a bachelor's degree in English from Hofstra University and wrote a regular column, "Roosevelt Pep Talk," for The L.I. Courier.
"She was a great civic leader, a great presence," said her pastor, the Rev. Reginald Tuggle of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Roosevelt.
"She was extremely active in getting people involved in their community," he said. "She helped people get to the polls on Election Day."
Northern was born in Nashville, Tenn., to Dr. James Edward Lancelot League Sr., and Nancy Jane Lyle League. She married in May 1949 and moved to Roosevelt in 1952.
She and her husband received numerous awards over the years for their community work. They were given the Nassau County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Recognition Award in 1992 and the Outstanding Citizen Award from then-County Executive Thomas Gulotta in 1990.
Tuggle conducted services in the John N. Moore Funeral Home in Roosevelt on Saturday. Burial was Monday in Calverton National Cemetery.[9][10]
