Col. William Leigh[1] was a chairman for the House of Burgesses, Militia Commander-in-Chief, member of the Virginia Council, and first Judge of the Admiralty Court in Virginia.[2]
On 28 May 28 1703, Benjamin Harrison wrote to Philip Ludwell: "Coll' Leigh fell from his horse lately and crack'd his Scull and is dead. Tis said he was Drunk at Parson Bookers of the Sabboth day, and going home home hapen'd to that Accident."[3]
In the mid-fifties, Albert Eugene Casey wrote a book in collaboration with Francis Powell Oetken about the Luke Lea family of Amite County, Luke was the son of James Lea of Country Line Creek who died 1792 in Caswell County, NC. In this book, they attributed the parents of James Lea of Country Line Creek. to be William Lea and Frances Major, descendants of William Lea of New Kent County b 1654. The Jamestown Society of VA stopped receiving applicants on this line over twenty years ago. I am the administrator for the Leas of Caswell County YDNA Project that shows the Caswell Leas are not related to this line, and that includes all of the Leas of Caswell County.

Is there any reliable source establishing the link between this William Leigh and the Lea children attached to this profile? If so, please reply with the source so we can properly cite it. If not, the children will also be detached.
I know Mary Leigh and Sarah Leigh are the children of Col. William Leigh. Their last names need to be changed. The sources are already in the bio. Since the profile for Elizabeth is blank without any sources at all, please disconnect her. There is total confusion about who the father of Philadelphia was but the comment made to Phillip Ludwell when "Old Col Leigh fell from his horse" shows some connection.
Which source are your referring to? The only one I see that is cited for Sarah is "Tower Records collected by: Sir Robert Cotton & published by Mr. Prynne," and I can't figure out what that is referring to. It seems to be referring to this collection of documents, but there's no page citation so it's impossible to figure out what in the collection is being cited. Do you know?
Cynthia Forde who publishes Spirit in the South of Caswell County, NC has verified that the man who married Mary Green was Col. William Leigh not Lea. The Leighs never changed their name to Lea.
Mary first raised this question a few month ago and there has not been any response. He appears on the Jamestown register and all other sources that I can identify from this profile as "Leigh", not Lea. Unless someone replies with a reliable source establishing that this William Leigh changed his name to Lea, I plan to change his LNAB to Leigh.
Does anyone have a valid source that Col. William Leigh changed his name to Lea? I only see documents with the spelling of Leigh. What sources do we have that show he had nine children? Names of those children? Thanks for the help,
I suggest that you move the entire list of descendants to a space page so that a biography highlighting this person will be more readable. It is admirable that you have provided it!
did I miss a source for his mother in what's posted? Catherine Ironmonger is not found as a daugther of Samuel & Bridget (Corderoy) Ironmonger in major sources... I'm trying to find her real parents. Any suggestions?
