Biography

Marie Josephe (LeNeuf) Leneuf de La Vallière was born on 18 Apr 1671 in Trois-Rivières, Canada, Nouvelle-France, daughter of Governor Michel (LeNeuf) Le Neuf (1640–abt. 1705) and Marie (Denys) Denis de Lafitte (1643–bef. 1687).[1], godfather Joseph Godfroy de Vieuxpont, godmother Marie Anne Leneuf.

In 1686, at Chiqnitou dit Beaubassin, Marie-Josephe, aged 15, was living with her father, Michel LENEUF [sic], Sr. de la Valliere, seigneur of Beaubassin, aged 45, a widower, and her seven siblings: Alexandre, aged 20, Jacques, aged 17, Jean-Baptiste, aged 12, Juditte [sic], aged 10, Michel, aged 8, Marguerite, aged 6, and Barbe, aged 4. The household had four servants; Francois LEGER, aged 55, GABRIEL, aged 20, Michel LARCHE [recte Hache], aged 22, and Marie LAGASSE [recte Mignier], aged 16. Also, living with them was the gunsmith, Me. PERTUIS. Her father owned 70 guns and controlled 60 arpents of cultivable land with 19 cattle, 22 sheep, and 12 hogs.[2]

Marie (21) married Jean Paul (Legardeur) Le Gardeur de St-Pierre (30) (born on 3 Oct 1661 in Québec, Canada; son of Sieur Jean Baptiste (Legardeur) Legardeur de Repentigny and Marguerite Nicolet) on 15 Sep 1692 in Repentigny, Canada.[3] Their known children were:

  1. Jean Baptiste Legardeur, b 10 Aug 1693 bapt 12th Repentigny
  2. Antoinette Gertrude Legardeur, b & bapt 29 Oct 1698 Montréal (ND)

  4. Agathe (Legardeur) Legardeur de St-Pierre (abt. 1700–1729) .
  5. Jacques (LeGardeur) Le Gardeur de Saint-Pierre (1701–1755)
  6. Charlotte Gertrude Legardeur, b c 1704; Charlotte Gertrude St-Pierre de Legardeur died 29 May 1734 buried 30th Montréal (ND) @ 30 years (might be Antoinette Gertrude, for whom no other record shows up)
  7. Marguerite Legardeur, b ?; married Henri Hiche 24 Jul 1713 Québec (ND) (Jetté says b c 1695)

Note: Ages for those without baptisms are from the marriage and funeral records themselves, ascribed by the priests. Not necessarily accurate. Their father had 2 fiefs in Acadie, granted to him in 1689 and 1697, where some of them may have been born.[4]

Death

She was buried on 15 July 1703, in Repentigny, the record is damaged, so her name does not appear, what shows is __neuf femme ____'[5] (note: Jetté ascribes the date of 3 July but the record, although only partial, does show the date, and prior entry is dated the 10th, so cannot be the 3rd)
