By 1930, Jacob was living with his mother and siblings in Manhattan, New York County, New York. His mother was listed as married on the census but his father was not in the home. She worked as a servant in a private home.[5] They were still in Manhattan in 1940.[6]
On his marriage record to Gwendolyn Clarine Knight in 1941, his parents were noted as Jacob Laurence and Rose Lee Laurence. The certificate number is 12939. The following information was listed on the transcription on Ancestry:[7]
