Biography

I was born in Long Beach, CA, in 1964. My father had served in San Diego, CA, in the Navy, but he had returned to Indianapolis after discharge. My parents moved from Indianapolis, IN, to CA, where I was born. They did not stay long, but moved us back to Indianapolis when I was 18 months old.

I grew up in Indianapolis, aquiring a younger sister and younger brother along the way. I attended Booth Tarkington School 92 from kindergarten through 4th grade, Robert Frost School 106 from 5th -8th grade, and Arlington High School.

During high school, I became interested in genealogy. My paternal grandmother watched us some weekends when my mother was working and I spent many afternoons looking and identifying photos with my Grandmother Ruth. I also interviewed some great aunts on my mother's side of the family for stories and ancestors.

I studied abroad for a summer in high school in Krefeld, Germany, in 1981, and then again during college in Tuebingen in 1985. While I knew that my family origins were English and German, given my last name and interest in Germany, I was slightly put out when my DNA test identified far more English, Irish, and Scottish hits than German ones. Ah well.

I moved to Washington, DC, for college and lived there until 2003, when my partner and I moved for a couple of years to Homer, AK. That's where our daughter was born. From there, we moved to Asheville, NC, before returning to Washington, DC. We now live just outside of the District.
