He was elected as the city of Greenwood's first Black mayor. His legacy includes his commitment to education of students of all ages. As a music enthusiast and double bassist, Ernest performed on stages around the United States and abroad. As an educator, he taught music at all levels and became supervisor of music for Caddo Parish and founded Louisiana School of Professions. Music was weft into everything that Ernest produced and accomplished.
