Biography

George Butler Lamping was born on 20 Mar 1875[1] in Spencer County, Indiana.[2][3] He was the son of Samuel W. Lamping and Mary E. Butler.[4]

A License was issued for the marriage of Edith Dillon Denny and George Butler Lamping on 7 Nov 1906 in King County, Washington. The license was returned on 11 Dec 1906.[5] They were married on 8 Nov 1906 at 1216 9th Avenue, Seattle. The ceremony was performed by J.A.D. Lloyd, Clergyman of St. Mark's Cathedral, with witnesses Caroline Denny and C. L. Lamping.[6] The announcement of their marriage in the Tacoma Daily Ledger calls George Colonel.[7]Edith filed for divorce from George on 4 Sept 1937.[8] George contested the divorce, which claimed cruelty and non-support.[9] They had at least the following children:

  • Mary Ann Lamping, b. 24 Jul 1909[10]
  • Doris K. Lamping, b. 28 Jul 1916[11]
  • Marcia Lamping, b. 7 Jan 1921[12]

George B. Lamping was a 2nd and 1st Lieutenant during the Spanish-American War, when he served in Co. D, 1st Washington Infantry, Signal Corps. He enlisted on 28 May 1894 in King County, Washington, and was discharged on 28 May 1894. He showed that he was a student.[13] He was commissioned as an officer on 29 Oct 1895. He was appointed captain and Adj. of the Regt. on 15 Dec 1900, promoted to Lt. Col. on 13 June 1901 and Col. of Regt. on 30 Oct 1905. He resigned as Adj. Gen. on 1 Jan 1911. He was appointed Colonel & Chief Commissary of Subsistence Dept. on 21 March 1911 and was honorably discharged on 29 April 1911.[14]

On 12 Nov 1918, George Butler Lamping registered for the World War 1 Draft. He lived at 1127-38th Ave. No., Seattle, King, Washington, and worked in insurance at Lamping & Co., 250 Coleman Bldg, Seattle. His nearest relative was Edith Denny Lamping.[1]

In 1920, George B. Lamping lived with his wife Edith D. and three children at 1127-38th N., Seattle, King, Washington. George worked in a fire insurance office. His parents were both born in Indiana.[3]

George B. Lamping, 76 years old, died on 12 Nov 1951 at the Veterans' Hospital, 4435 Beacon Avenue, Seattle. He was divorced, and his usual residence was the Elks Club.[4] He is buried at Lake View Cemetery, Seattle, King, Washington.[2] He is buried at the Lake View Cemetery, Seattle, King, Washington.[15]

His obituary refers to Lamping as Col. George B. Lamping. Although born in Indiana, He moved with his father to Yakima in 1888 and to Seattle in 1889. He served as a State senator, was a member of the Seattle Port Commission for several terms and was active in Republican state politics. He was survived by three daughters, one son, four brothers and 1 sister.[16]

Col. George B. Lamping was born in Indiana, not Iowa, and he served in the Spanish-American War as part of the 1st Washington Infantry Regiment.
