Biography

Frederick William Lamarque was born 10 Jul 1835 in Chelmsford, Essex. He was the son of William Adolphus Lamarque and Sarah (Cooper) Lamarque.

By March 30th 1851, William and Sarah were in Alderbury, Wiltshire (civil parish of Fisherton Anger). William was working as an inland revenue collector. They had six children - Frederick William (15 and born in Chelmsford), George James Louis (13 and born in Ipswich), Frank Vaudreuil (11 and born in Shadwell, London), Maria Louisa (7 and born in Stepney, London), Sarah Anna Maude (3 and born in Camberwell) and Harry Edward (11 months old and born in Fisherton Anger, Wiltshire). All of the children were learning at home. There was a nursery governess, Annis M Brown, who was 23 and from Bow in London; they also had a cook and a house servant, both from Wiltshire.

By April 2nd 1871, the family were in Stourmouth, Kent; Frederick was said to be the head of the household. William and Sarah, and three of their other children, Maria, Sarah and Harry, were in Frederick's household. There was one servant. Harry was working as a brewer's clerk; William was 65, and retired; and Frederick was a master brewer. Lamarque Brothers owned Stourmouth Brewery, and an 1874 advert of theirs read:

  EAST INDIA & FAMILY
  PALE ALE BREWERS,
  STOURMOUTH BREWERY,
  NEAR WINGHAM, KENT.[1]

By April 3rd 1881, they were living at Cleavland, Hampton Rd, Teddington, Middlesex. William, at 75, was still said to be an inland revenue collector. Frederick, Frank, Maria, Sarah and Harry were all still single and in the household. There was also a grandson, Ernest Charles William Lamarque, aged 1 and born in Bearsted, Kent, and two servants. Frederick was working as a produce merchant; Frank was a bank manager; Harry was a bank clerk, and Maria and Sarah weren't in paid employment.

Frederick's father died on 30 Oct 1883 in Oak Bank, Godalming. He was buried on 2 Nov 1883 in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming, in the consecrated section. His will was proved on 12 Dec 1883; his estate was worth about £8,800. He was said to be formerly of Fern Side, Teddington, Middlesex, but more recently of Oak Bank, Godalming. His executors were his sons William Frederick Lamarque (merchant of Oak Bank), George James Louis Lamarque (surveyor of taxes, of Nightingale Road, Godalming), Frank Vaudreuil Lamarque (bank manager of Chertsey) and Harry Edward Lamarque (merchant's clerk of Oak Bank).

Frederick's mother died on 20 Dec 1888 at Oak Bank, Godalming, aged 80. She was buried on 24 Dec 1888 with her husband. She left about £460. Frederick (of Oak Bank, secretary to a public company) was one of her executors.

Frederick's brother George died on 11 Oct 1891 at Strathearn House, Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland. He was described as formerly of Maidstone, Kent, but recently of Chelmsford, Essex. His brothers Frederick (who was living in Godalming and working as secretary to a public company) and Frank (of Chertsey, bank manager) were his executors. He left about £2300.

By March 31st 1901, Frederick, Frank, Maria, Sarah and Harry were in Godalming, Surrey. Frederick was the head of the household, and was living on his own means. Frank was a bank manager. Maria, Sarah and Harry were all living on their own means. They had one thirteen-year-old servant girl.

Frederick died on 23 Nov 1903 (according to the burial records) or 21 Nov (according to the probate record), aged 68, at his home, "Ferney", 18 Beaufort Road, Kingston on Thames. He was buried on 25 Nov 1903 in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming, in the consecrated section, next to his parents. His executors were his brothers Frank (bank manager) and Harry (gentleman). He left £904.
