Biography

Jakob was born in 1859 in Kemi, Finland[1] to Jakob Laiti and Caisa (Kilpinen) Laiti.[2][3][4]

October 1881-Emigrated to the United States from Stockholm, Sweden.[5]

Jacob married Mary Laakkonen about 1889, likely in Oregon where their oldest son was born. In 1890, Jacob was residing in the "Villard House," in Portland, Oregon.[6] On 7 February 1891, Edward, their oldest son was born and baptized eight days later at First Immanuel Lutheran Church, Portland, in the presence of several sponsors, one of which was Petter Arvid Laiti (1866-), Jacob's brother.[7]

Later in 1891. the couple with their baby travelled to Lead City, Lawrence County, South Dakota, where Jacob likely obtained work in the mines there. Their next four children were born in South Dakota, the last born in 1898. With 5 children under the age of 8, the family once again set off, returning to the Northwest, settling in Carbonado, Pierce County, Washington. Carbonado was a company owned mining town and Mary in found there in the 1900 census. Jacob had left Carbonado and the mines, likely after the devastating explosion in 1899 that killed so many of his friends and neighbors. See: Carbon Hill No. 7 Mine Disaster 1899

Not long after, the young family moved to Ballard, Washington. It was there that Jacob established himself as a contractor, building many homes in Ballard.[8]

Research Notes

Where was Jacob in the 1900 Census? Mary was in Carbonado and Jacob's youngest child was born in Ballard in 1902. Jacob built a home in Ballard in 1900. I believe that this is Jacob in the 1900 Census boarding in a place on Jackson Street in Seattle. While the place of birth of Jacob and his parents is incorrect, it is possible the info belonged to the person listed above him.[18]
