When John L Laird was born in Scotland on October 25, 1809[1], his father, John, was 32 and his mother, Jennette, was 28. He emigrated to America, where he married Marion Colquhoun in 1830 in New York[2]. He and his family emigrated to Utah Territory as part of the early LDS pioneers[3][4][5]. He also married Laura Snow Davis[1] on March 21, 1853, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and had one more son with her[6]. He died on November 14, 1887, in Brigham City, Utah, having lived a long life of 78 years, and was buried in Millville, Utah.[7]
