Charles Jean Baptiste Labelle served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: Aug 16, 1864 Mustered out: June 24, 1865 Side: USA Regiment(s): 10th New York Infantry
The following comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook page:
LIVED IN SARANAC – DIED IN SALT LAKE CITY - Charles LaBelle was 18 years old when he enlisted in the 10th Infantry in Plattsburgh as a substitute for William Burns. He was mustered in as a private on August 16, 1864, expecting to serve for three years. As a substitute, he received $300, and an extra bounty from the town of $200. The county gave him $1,000 for his enlistment.
The regiment was engaged in the long siege of Petersburg that started in the spring of 1864. By the end of August, they had received over 100 casualties and Charles was one of the replacement troops. Charles joined the 10th when they had only two more battles in 1864.
After remaining in the Petersburg area for the winter, the 10th was in the final assault on April 2, 1865. For the next couple of months, the regiment performed guard duties near Richmond until they returned to Munson’s Hill in Fairfax, VA, and was mustered out on June 24th.
Charles returned to the Saranac area and his parents, Jean-Baptiste LaBelle and Lucy Paye. He worked with his father in his carpenter’s shop and continued his trade as a wheelwright. By 1870, he had moved West and by the 1890s was a well-known architect in Salt Lake City.
He married Florence Pidge in 1890, who, with her brothers, had sailed “around the horn” to settle in California. The couple had three children born in 1891, 1898 and 1903. Charles died five years after the birth of his last child and was buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery at 61 years of age. Florence moved back to California to be with her brothers and died in San Raphael in 1957 when she was 88. Their youngest son, Charles Wallace LaBelle, died in Las Vegas in 1996 at 93 years old.
