Excerpt from Turton Centennial BookTurton’s Mrs. Rahm was quite a Person
By Harold D. Iones, Redfield Press, March 31,1983
"I wrote in this column last week “ things hadn’t really changed that much in Redfield” during the two months I wintered in Arizona. What I was trying to imply was there were still plenty of meetings and activities in Redfield to keep me busy. Actually, some things had changed. For one, my good friend of long standing Mrs. George (Amelia) Rahm of Turton, died during the time that I was gone. My friendship with Mrs. Rahm goes back to the time when I moved to Redfield in 1949 to become editor of The Press. Mrs. Rahm was the Turton correspondent for The Press and she was one of the best correspondents the newspaper had during the 31 years I served as editor. She included in her Turton column the homey, little news items that people like to read, but she also included bits of philosphy, wisdom and humor which made the Turton news a real delight to read each week. Mrs. Rahm and I didn’t agree on everything — sometimes I wondered if we agreed on anything. She was a loyal, staunch Democrat and I was a Republican. We used to give each other a
jab about politics whenever the opportunity presented itself. Mrs. Rahm w as also a good Catholic — one of the best — and I am a Methodist. My wife and I used to go to the fall dinners at the “Cathedral on the Plains” in Turton and Mrs. Rahm always welcomed us like we were real dignitaries. She and I used to tease each other about our religious differences but it was always in good fun. I ’ll always remember it was during one of my last visits with her at the James Valley Nursing Home she told me, “ I don’t think it really makes any difference which church we go to. We’re all trying to get to the same place.” I’m as sure as I can be of anything that Mrs. Rahm is in that “place” today. Mrs.Rahm performed many kind acts for my wife and I and we’ll never forget them. We’ll always remember, too, when our children were small she never failed to remember their birthdays with a card or gift of some sort. I ’m not sure how much formal education Mrs. Rahm had and I never really cared. She was one of those persons who had a lot of common sense and who was intelligent in many ways. She always had a sharp mind and I was especially happy she kept that sharp mind right to the end. She just wouldn’t have been the same without some witty quips. When my wife and I visited her late last fall she recited — by memory — a poem she had recently written. And that poem must have had 14 or 16 verses! Yes, I do have m any p leasant m emories of my 31 years a t The Press and Amelia Rahm is one of those pleasant memories. "
