Biography

Edward was born on 28 January 1825 in Richmond, Henrico, Virginia, USA.

He began his apprenticeship in the carriage business at the age of 12 in September 1837 under the tutorship of J. E. Laughton of Richmond. He served faithfully for five years. Then, on the 19th of October 1843, he left Richmond and walked to Tennessee with three dollars and a half in his pocket. He arrived in February 1844 and promptly went to work for a local carriage maker. ^[1]

When Edward was 21 he married Elizabeth Amanda Wilson on 12 February 1846 in Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, USA. In 1849 they had a son, John E. Kuhn. Eliza died when John was about five years old.

When Edward was 30 he married Sarah Josephine Smith on 17 January 1856 in Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, USA. They had two children, Antoinette Estelle and Robert E. Sarah died in 1862.

When Edward was 41 he married Flora Dorothea Smith, Sarah's younger sister, on 10 April 1866 in Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee. They had five children, Mumford Smith (named after Sarah and Flora's father), Irene, Flora Dorothea, Edward Jr., and William Hewlett.

In the 1870's he served several terms as Columbia's Mayor.
