Hi Steven!

Thanks for joining us! I hope you're enjoying our site and our community. I just wanted to check in and see how things are going. Has the New Member How To Pages been helpful or has it left you with questions?

It's great to have you on board. Enjoy your time here, and good luck growing your branches. If you need help just click on my name and you will be transferred to my profile where you can post a message or send me a private message.

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

I have more than one person in my family tree but they were adopted (or the equilvalent in the era,) but I see no way to make entries that understand how that works (biological vs raised by.)

Any assistance would be helpful

This is a good question. I have such a situation where a late-nineteenth century ancestor was adopted in infancy when his parents died and used his adopted parents' family name (his older brothers were also raised by the same family but kept their family name). The only way to reflect the connection with the adoptive family is with wikilinks in the biography text of the relevant profiles.

One could reverse the preference, but when putting the adoptive parents in the parents fields, click "non-biological." Then put the biological parents in the text. A template exists that I think can be used in either case: Template:Adopted_Child.

I'm actually thinking about how such wikilinks might enable mapping of social connections, although it would get complicated to separate out those links by type (adoptive parent, business partner, teacher/student, etc.).

If you haven't searched G2G, there are several relevant discussions there (I searched "adoptive"). HTH...

Hello Steven, nice to see you on WikiTree!

So, the way it works is, every user has a Watchlist that is automatically populated by the profiles you create. However, if there's a profile you're interested in following which you didn't create, you can request to be on its Trusted List. Once approved, it will appear on your Watchlist and (in the case of private profiles) you'll have have access to editing, etc.

I'd be happy to add you to the Trusted List for Thornton Chase and any other Baha'i profiles I manage! Have you seen the Baha'i categories?

Kind regards,

Vicky Majewski

Hi, yes maybe I saw Bahai_Faith and Bahai but I didn't notice either on Baha'i entries like Chase but I hardly know what I'm looking at so far. Yes please add me as you see appropriate on Baha'i profiles.

I'm "in" wikitree for a few reasons: yes I have some geneological work to do on my own family, but obviously also Baha'is in general. Additionally there is a realm of understanding the broader engagement of Baha'is and hmmm - what to call it - socially engaged scholarly publication? It's a curiosity of mine too. I think and old term would be citizen journalism or citizen scientists.

Hi again Steven,

Would you mind putting in a Trusted List request for Thornton Chase's profile? You can use this link here: https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Chase-7215&action=joinnetwork Once you do that, I can add you to his and other profiles.

Thanks!

Thanks. I don't know the syntax equivalent but see https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Source_for_looking_up_Bahá'ís to which your input would be welcome.

The "tags" I mentioned above are one thing seemingly particular to registered individuals? Then I see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Baha%27i_Faith … but not how to be added as an interested person. Compare with say https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Bahá%27%C3%AD_Faith/Members where you add yourself to a list…

Hi again Steven,

Yes, tags are specific to user accounts and I believe their purpose is to share your genealogical interests with other users (since WikiTree is primarily focused on collaborative genealogy). Not sure if you've seen this already but here's a link to the page which explains how tags work on WikiTree: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Tags

Whereas, categories are mainly for profiles, although you can also put yourself in a category if it fits. There's an entire Categorization Project here on WikiTree which controls how categories are formed and which go where: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Categorization

My name is in the "Interested Members" box because I was advising them at one point on how Baha'i categories could be formed in the framework they were using for other religious organisations. However, I'm sure they'd welcome more input! I've been doing this by myself for several years now and it's always good to have others involved.

I believe I can add you to the list since I created it in the first place, but I'll also give the Categorization Project a heads up that there are other interested folks. If you'd like me to add you, that is!

There are lots of differences between WikiTree and other wikimedia platforms. For example, a lot of the info I've added on the early Baha'is is focused on family tree and records rather than a more detailed biography which would be more appropriate for entries Wikipedia and Bahaikapedia (which I try to link where appropriate).

Kind regards,

Vicky Majewski
