Biography

John was born in 1887 in Grey County. He is the son of Hugh Knott and Margaret Wright.

Military service - World War I. Lieut. C.E.F.

Jack Knott joined the 101st Edmonton Fusiliers (militia) as a Lieutenant, and took two months of infantry training. Enlisted in the 202nd Edmonton Sportsman Battalion, C.E.F., and was sent to England, where the 202nd took specialist training in the Lewis gun, bombing, signalling and sniping. The 202nd was disbanded with the specialists scattered amongst other battalions.

As a First Lieutenant, Jack Knott was sent to the 31st Alberta Battalion (Bell's Bull Dogs), and served at the front during the last 100 days of the First World War, and was in the trenches on the 11th of November. Indeed, they went into battle at 10:00 a.m., on November 11th, 1918. Lieut. Knott was wounded three times.

The 31st Btn travelled to Bonn, Germany, and served as occupation troops at the Bonn Bridge until the battalion was returned to Canada in 1919, where Jack Knott took a small lot in Edmonton, and built a home.
