Regiment(s): Company C 96th New York Infantry

Hiram was born in 1848. He was the son of Seymour Knickerbocker and Jane Bennett. He passed away in 1920.

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

FOURTEEN YEARS OLD WHEN ENLISTED - The first of Hiram Knickerbocker’s ancestors to come to New York was Harmen Jansen Knickerbocker who settled in Dutchess County in the late 1600s. His grandfather, Seymour, fought in the War of 1812 and settled in Warren County after the war. Hiram was born on March 18, 1848, making him only 14 years and 12 days old when he enlisted on March 30, 1862, although he gave his age as 18.

By April 17, 1862, the 96th with Hiram in Company I was at the Siege of Yorktown and fought until the end of July up and down the Virginia Peninsula between the James and the York Rivers. They camped near Fort Monroe before being sent to North Carolina to defend the country against privateers who were smuggling goods up local rivers to support the Confederacy.

The regiment was ordered to the Operations Before Petersburg in 1864 and Hiram re-enlisted on March 30, 1864, for a town bounty of $300. Between May and the end of October 1864, they suffered almost 300 casualties. Their bloodiest battles being Cold Harbor and Chaffin’s Farm. The assault on Petersburg was their last engagement on April 2, 1865, and they were held in the area to perform police and garrison duties until February 6, 1866.

Hiram returned to Warrensburg and continued to work on farms to support his family. When his wife, Harriett, died in 1896, he found work wherever he could and lived in boarding houses for the rest of his life.

The Lake George News of March 26, 1920, carried his obituary - Hiram C. Knickerbocker, aged seventy-three years and life-long resident of Warrensburg, died Thursday night of tubercular throat trouble at his home on River Street. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served three years in the 96th Regt. NY Vols. The surviving relatives are a daughter, Mrs. William H. Ovitt of this village, a brother, Fred Knickerbocker, of Fort Edward, and a sister, Mrs. Harriet Plum, of Bolton Landing. Burial in the Warrensburg Cemetery.
