Hi Diane

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi Kathie,

I am having a hard time doing my research to figure out if my ancestors are Cherokee or part of Eastern Cherokee because I'd like to enroll (if possible). Any pointers you can recommend?

You need to start by building your tree farther back. Citizenship in Cherokee Nation (Oklahoma) is only open to direct descendants of a Cherokee person on the Cherokee portion of the 1907 Dawes Roll. That roll required a person to be living in the Cherokee Nation before 1896 and to still be there in 1903. Citizenship in the Eastern Band requires direct descent from someone on the 1924 Baker Roll and a minimum blood quantum, but is closed to all but newborns or individuals who were adopted by non-Cherokee as infants or children.

There are people who are Cherokee descendants whose Cherokee ancestor is not on one of those rolls. Their ancestors will be found on the Guion Miller Roll (1907-1911) or on the Siler/Chapman rolls (1851/52). Those rolls included Cherokee descendants who had remained in the East after Removal but gave up their Cherokee citizenship in order to remain.

Hi Diane

We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point. Take your time, keep track of sources, and ask questions. Check here for tips.

Hi. Thank you. I do have a family tree just not sure how to import it here. Also have taken DNA test. Not sure if I linked it or not.

Hi Diane,

Yes, your DNA worked, I can see your DNA badge (it will take up to 24 hours for your DNA results to show up in the right hand column here on your profile page.)

To import your tree here - do you have a GEDcom file, or a tree online somewhere else? If so let me know and I'll send you further instructions.

Kindest regards ~ Pam
