Biography

Anne was born about 1600. She passed away about 1670.

Nothing is known about the origins of Ann, wife to Philip Hill. They would have been married before their daughter Ann's birth in about 1628, either in England or Barbados.[1]

According to a deposition by her son-in-law Peter Tallman, Ann and her children Ann and Richard came to Rhode Island with him shortly after June 2, 1648.[2]

Widow Ann Hill went on to marry John Elton.[2]

On October 14, 1662 Thomas Hobson accused Ann's son-in-law Peter Tallman of cheating her and her children out of 300£. Peter was acquitted, but Hobson requested an appeal before the court in England which he was granted. Ann Elton "of Portsmouth" asked that the Court seize Tallman's property, including his "negers, goods, cattells, money..." in repayment. [3]

According to the deposition, Ann lived in Flushing, Long Island, then Staten Island, and then moved to Virginia with her son Robert Hill (who had property in Farnham Parish). The deposition then goes on to say that Philip's wife Ann had one or more children with one Capt. Hudson who "it is reported" she married.[1]

Research Notes

The final part of the deposition seems a little suspect - Ann could not have had a child after/if she left Rhode Island where Court Records indicate she lived in 1662.

Some sources say that Ann went to Southold, New York. There was a John Elton located there in 1652, but it was a different man (a son or nephew?)

Some sources indicate that John Hobson/Hudson was married to Ann.

Just a question, does anyone know if there could be any records still in existence of the English immigrants who went to Barbados in the 1627-1649 period?

Christopher Kenny, I found the source for Ann unkown-549406 Hill, mother of Ann Hill Tallman Durfey. His name is Rick Durfey. We were in correspondence about 10 years ago or so. If you Google Rick Durfey, story of Ann Hill, it will come up. This is a project that Rick Durfey has been working on. Ann Hill Tallman's mother, unkown Hill. was married 3 times. Her maiden name was Kinge.

I just want to merge Ann Kinge-149 with Ann Unkown-549406 Hill. Can you facilitate the merge or give me permission to do it? I am sorry I got my previous sources mixed up. Sally Durfey-114

The profile manager of Ann (unknown) Hill will have to approve the merge, but you can initiate it, since you are the profile manager of Ann Kinge. If she doesn’t respond after 30 days, then someone else can approve it.

Sources for the added parents? I find it suspect that she would be the daughter of Phillip Hill, and the wife of Phillip Hill.
