Biography

William was born on 1 July 1515 in Purleigh, Essex, son of John Kynge and (maybe: Katherine Slyng). [1]

Marriage

His wife was Cecily _____ (possibly Cecily Browne, born in Purleigh, Essex circa 1519?)

Children

They had issue: [2]

  1. Mary Kinge
  2. Alice Kinge (who became Alice Baldwin)
  3. Thomas (Kinge) King (-bef.1588)
  4. John Kinge (the youngest son)
  5. Priscilla Kinge
  6. Abraham Kinge
  7. Marie Kinge

Find a Grave reference suggests there was a daughter Isabella and that Marie became Marie Montague.

George Morrison sets out the Kinge family history in his book on families that bear arms and he records William as the father of Thomas (Kinge) King (-bef.1588), of Purleigh, Essex who left a will and died 1588. [3]

Life Story

William was of Great Baddow, Essex, but he also owned or rented extensive lands in Burnham, Maryland and Althorne, which are all villages in Essex. He was known as ‘William of Baddow’. [4] He had inherited land from his father, set out in the will as, My tenement and lands called Rawlyns lying in the parish of Mayland to son William and My father in lawe William Slynge and Alice his wife to have my wykes called Redward and Calfe Cope in Burnham to keep my son William till 21 to pay the lord yerly £16-13-4 and to deliver to William when of age. [5]

His brother, Robert Kinge obtained a grant of arms from William Harvey, the Clarenceux Herald in 1562: Arms: Azure a bend ermine between two eagles displayed with two necks or. Crest: A leopard's head erased or between two wings gules.[6]

Death

He died on 1 July 1570, leaving a will. [7]

FindaGrave.com shows that William was buried in St Mary’s the Virgin churchyard, Great Baddow, Essex on 27 September 1570. [8] [9]

Research Notes

Need sources for his wife's family name; and mother's name

There is no reliable link for him to Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire even although some researchers attribute him to Aston Clinton. Thus, whilst William Kinge (abt.1500-bef.1570) maybe the same as this William the research attached to that person does not fit with George Morrison's published entries. This Kynge family appear really well rooted tenants/land owners and farmers in Essex.

Find a Grave cites that William died 1 July 1570. Essex records cite he was buried on 27 September - that seems a long gap in the summer months; I July may not be accurate.[10]
