Biography

William King, oldest son of the late Thomas King, died at his home in Rosebud, Jul 12, 1929 after several months’ illness.

He was born near Brownfield, IL Sep 2, 1842, hence was 86Y 9M 10D of age.

He received his common school education at the Shedville school near where he lived and the Independence school near Rosebud.

When the call came for volunteers in the Civil War he enlisted in defense of the Union, Sep 25, 1861 in Company G, Sixth Illinois Cavalry under Capt. John M Boicourt of Golconda and served through the war and was honorably discharged after his great march with Sherman to the sea Dec 14, 1864.

May 4, 1864 he was married to Caroline Kelly, of Stonefort, who passed away Jul 23, 1883. Three children were born to this union; two sons, David A and Walter E King who preceded his father to the great beyond Nov 14, 1897; and Mima C Armstrong of Boulder, CO; and one foster daughter, Mrs Harry K Davis of Phoenix, AZ. On Mar 23, 1884, he was again married to Martha Sheridan of Golconda; two sons being born to this union, both dying in infancy.

In Mar 1867 he entered the mercantile business and continued in that for 62 years and as long as he was able to go.

He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Susan Weldon of East St Louis and Ms Nelson Smith of Metropolis; and four brothers, Thomas A and Marion A King of Rosebud and J L King of Metropolis, and U. G. King of Harrisburg.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jul 14, 1929 at 11: a m at his late residence. Elder W E Baker officiating, after which his body was interred in the Antioch cemetery.

Thus another old landmark has been removed; an honest, upright citizen, well known and held in the highest esteem by his many friends.
