Notes

John King ... [10] is a mystery. family lore is that he spoke Dutch and came over from Holland. this same lore is attributed to Hermanus King the immigrant. Some have married him to [2]Katherine Leonard who married John King in Massachusetts. They had a son named John but he supposedly died in Massachusetts. Some have said that he fought in the Revolution with Sarah Addair's Father and married her after the war. Some have said that he married four times. Some have said that he married Peggy Anderson. Who was John King?

Multiple John Kings in Montgomery County, VA:

  • 1810 Census: lists both John King Sr and John King Jr
  • 1799 Marriage: John King & [3] Sarah Addair
  • 1803 Marriage: John King & [4] Peggy Anderson (by 1830 she is widowed and living in IL near some of her siblings)
  • 1815 Marriage: John King Jr & [5] Sarah Becklehimer, his father listed as John King
  • 1818 Marriage: John King & Peggy Brannon

John married Sarah in 1799 at age 40. Were there any John King marriages before then? say around 1779ish? not necessarily in VA.

Family Lore is that John was from the north and that he had four wives and spoke dutch.

1810:

6 Females Under 15 1795-1810 4 Males Under 25 1785-1810

The Will only mentions 1 son Henry…

1815 John King had 4 white males over 16 1 Slave above 12.

1815 John King JR. married Sarah Beckelhimer daughter of Jacob.

John King Jr. pops up in the 1816 Tax list with 1 tithable

John King Sr. 2 Tithables…and 1 Slave and 4 horses Still has a boy with him.

1815 - 16 = 1799… if he married Sarah Addair in 1799 who is the mother of the other Children?

John King sign some paperwork in the 1780s with a Caty… it was at Rosanna Shillings wedding.

Assuming its the same Rosannah in the Census (it is) …

This is probably John and Catys children along with John and Sarah Addairs children.

I believe John King Jr is the son of John King husband of Sarah Addair but through a previous marriage…

I could be wrong, but would love to talk about this.

YDNA would really help.

John and Sarah had 7 children. all after 1799. Catherine in 1815. no sign of John Jr. being related. there were many John Kings in those days.

John was about 40 in 1799 so he may have had a previous marriage or two. we don't know who they were, but I am pretty sure that John Jr. may have been a neighbor as I am descended from John Jr.s daughter olive and also from Henry d King. Henry's daughter Nancy King married olives son, George Bartlett.

Rosanna Schilling was the daughter of Elizabeth King Schilling.

John Jr. was born about 1795ish. and died before 5 June 1822. I was thinking he might be from a previous marriage too.

Catherine king was the daughter of John and Sarah. she married Joseph L. king.

if John King m. Sarah Addair in 1799 when she was 20ish and he was 40ish, it is highly possible he may have married someone else about 1779ish. who was his first wife?

John King 1759 - 1843. The family Bible for John King was a German Bible. Family stories say that the family name was originally Koenig. Stories also say that he came from Germany via Holland and then to Pennsylvania. I suspect the part about Holland is doubtful. Stories also say that he spoke Dutch. I suspect this is doubtful also. Later generations saw his family Bible and on the front of the Bible was printed Deutsch. Not knowing that this meant "German", they thought it meant Dutch and thus the stories about coming from Holland and speaking Dutch. Many Germans immigrated to Pennsylvania and they are referred to as Pennsylvania Dutch, but are actually German. He appeared to have a nickname of Captain although he was only a Private in the Revolutionary War. This nickname is supported by some tax record receipts in Virginia showing a title of Captain. He almost certainly had one wife, Sarah Addair, with seven children. There were six girls and one boy, Henry D. King. He owned land in Virginia. He was a blacksmith. He made black powder. He also was a farmer. Where he was born is unknown. It is likely he was born in Pennsylvania or Maryland. He joined the war in Maryland. Captain Stull appears to be a family friend of the King's and he recruited John. It is also possible he was born in Virginia.

Elizabeth was born about 1796. Before Sarah married. A John King married a different Peggy Anderson that year so maybe 🤔 that Peggy was John's first wife and he remarried Sarah as a second wife. He was forty in 99 after all. And in 96 a different Peggy would have been at the age. I suspect that Elizabeth was from the first marriage.

if John married Peggy Anderson in 1796 and had Elizabeth then Peggy may be the mother of all his children and Sarah may have married another John altogether. But as Henry was born about 1801 I suspect that Sarah was his second wife.

Elizabeth b. 1796 ish before the marriage of Sarah Addair indicates a previous marriage for John. family lore says he married four times but I doubt that.

however, I found two marriages to Peggy Anderson. one in 1796 and one in 1803. so maybe he married Peggy in 1796 and had Elizabeth and maybe married Sarah in 99. then Peggy again in 03. makes no sense so I doubt it, but Elizabeth is born before 99.

John King 1759-1843 was my 4th great grandfather. John R King

Wilmer Wise King John Reuben King Robert Woods King Henry King John King 1759-1859

My 4th gg married once to Sarah Addair. Peggy Anderson married another John King. There were 5 John King's in the area where my John King lived in Virginia.

Searching for my 5th great grandfather.

Family lore says JK spoke Dutch, but it is unlikely. That lore developed from the word Deutch on the front of his family Bible. His family mistook that word to mean Dutch, but actually means German. The best current theory is the family came to the colonies from the Duchy of Zweibruecken and arrived in Philadelphia. The family gradually moved from Philadelphia to Maryland and then to Virginia. I suspect John's father was Abraham King amd his mother was Anna Maria King. John King 1759-1843 was probably born in Pennsylvania or Maryland.

John, I agree with you. I disconnected this John King from Margaret/Peggy (Anderson-12549). She did marry a John King in 1803, but was widowed by 1830 and living in Pope County, IL with several of the families of her siblings. She remarried Alexander Gray in 1838, Pope, IL. She is named as daughter Peggy King in her father's will written in 1833 and later named as Peggy Gray in her mother's 1843 will.

Her children by John King were Druscilla, Anderson, Alexander Nelson and John W King.

I have DNA from pegs father so I assumed she was the one. But maybe her line is olive king Bartlett's line. Her father was John king Jr or Sr.

if he married Peggy Anderson first and then Sarah Addair a few short years later, then Sarah must be the mother of his children. However DNA matches imply that I am related to Peggy and no matches to Sarah which may mean that Peggy was actually the mother of the children and Sarah may have married another John King altogether. Also, some have connected him to Katherine Leonard who was much older than him. and olivia's records say her father was John jr. so he may be the son of the John who married Katherine leonard??

i have a dna match to peggy andersons father jacob so that connects her to either olivia or henry or both. have found no dna matches to sarah adair so no real proof she married this john king yet. also olivias records say her father was john jr.
