In 1890, William was the tenth of thirteen children born to of Michael King and Mary Walsh, a farming family of Cloonmore, Claremorris in County Mayo. The 1901 Census of Ireland recorded William as a ten-year-old farmer's son. However, he was absent from the family home a decade later for the 1911 Census.
No other civil records for William's adult life in the area have been identified.
