In her household is her son Pleas age 18 born June 1881 in Kansas and working as a day laborer. Mattie has had 7 children with 6 still living.[1]
The 1910 U.S. Federal Census records Martha King, a widow age 65 born in Kentucky, living in Atchison, Atchison Co., Kentucky. In her household are her son Plez King age 28 born in Kansas and his wife Ruby age 25 born in Kansas. Plez and Ruby are recorded to have been married for one year and she has had no children.[2]
Plez King, born June 28, 1881, died June 6, 1917 from Bright’s disease and was buried in Oak Hill cemetery. The obituary states that he was “survived by his mother Martha Harper King and three sisters: Mrs. B.C. Jackson of Atchison, Mrs. T.B. Davenport of Union City, Tenn., and Mrs. William Black of East St. Louis. The obituary also states that he was never married.[3] However, an article published in The Atchison Daily Globe on October 29, 1919 confirms the acknowledgement that Martha King had grandsons. It reads: “Mrs. Martha King, colored, 720 North First street, left last night for St. Louis, where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Black. Mrs. King’s twin grandsons, Frank and Wash King, accompanied her.” [4]
