Biography

William was baptised on 16 September 1770, at Compton Martin, Somerset, England, the son of William and Hannah King.[1]

William King married Elizabeth Ricketts on 20 May 1793 at Chew Magna, Somerset, England.[2]

William was a farmer. After their marriage, William and Elizabeth (or 'Betty') King may have privately baptised their first child, William, at Stowey (Elizabeth's birthplace) in December 1793[3] but, if so, it seems he died in infancy. Sometime before 1896 they were living in the hamlet of Ashton, near Chapel Allerton, Somerset, where their three eldest surviving children were born. By 1802, they had moved back to Moreton, Compton Martin. Known children include:

  • Mary, bapt. 17 April 1796, Chapel Allerton, Somerset.
  • John, bapt. 29 December 1797, Chapel Allerton, Somerset.
  • William, bapt. 3 October 1799, Chapel Allerton, Somerset.[4]
  • Elizabeth, bapt. 18 January 1802, Compton Martin, Somerset.
  • Martha, bapt. 19 August 1804, Compton Martin, Somerset.
  • Hester, bapt. 27 April 1806, Compton Martin, Somerset.
  • Robert Ricketts, b. Compton Martin, bapt. 13 November 1808, Stowey, Somerset.[5]
  • George, bapt. 10 February 1811, Compton Martin, Somerset.[6]

William King, aged 70, wife Elizabeth, daughter Martha and son Robert are recorded at Moreton, Compton Martin, on the 1841 census.[7] The same family members (plus various nephews and nieces) were still at Moreton in 1851 when William was recorded as aged 80 and a farmer of 70 acres, employing 3-4 men.[8]

Wiliam King died at Moreton, aged 83, and was buried on 14 October 1853 at Compton Martin, Somerset, England.[9]
