Biography

While his birth registration reads Thomas Ernest Stanley King, he was known by the name William Stanley King.^[1]

William was a carpenter when he enlisted for World War I in September of 1914 (service no. 8556). He received a shrapnel wound to the hand in 1915. William was promoted to corporal in July of 1916.

William was struck by an enemy hand grenade in the early hours of 1 Aug 1916, while on patrol duty in front of trench 39 at Hill 60, Zillebeke. He was taken at once to the Regimental Aid Post, but died on the way down.^[2]

He was buried at Woods Cemetery in Ypres.^[3] He is also commemorated at his family's gravestone at Wolford Cemetery,^[4]
