John was born in 1852. He was the son of William Harvey King and Mahala Jane (Chase) King. In 1860[1] and 1870[2] he lived with his parents and siblings in Sullivan County, Tennessee.
He married Martha Angeline Cox on 25 Nov 1873.[3][4][5][6][7] By 1880[8] his family had expanded to include three children living in Sullivan County where he farmed. In 1900[9] and 1910[10] he continued to work on the farm he owned in Sullivan County.
