Charles Edward King was born in 1875[1] to Charles King and Julia Walker,[2] who had been enslaved at birth. His parents had relocated to New York City where they were married and set up a household.
He married Estelle Stansberry in 1904 at the residence of Mrs. F. Richards, 170 Sands Street in Brooklyn. [3] The ceremony was officiated by Dr. W.T. Dixon. Mr. Chipwin was his best man. [4] The couple raised seven children. Their son William "Dolly" King was considered to be one of the best all-around athletes in the 1930's and the 1940's. Their son Haldane was a navigator with the legendary Tuskegee Airmen.
Charles was employed as a reception clerk for the George Batten Company Advertising Office on Madison Ave in Manhattan.[5] He had worked for the company for twenty years prior to his death. He had an uncanny memory for names and faces and, because of that, he was well known by many advertising men in all parts of the country. When he saw a man once, was told his name, and then saw the same man again five or more years later, he invariably remembered the name of the caller, mentioned his firm and asked if he wished to see the same member of the Batten firm he had seen on his first visit.
He died in 1926[6] and is buried in The Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.[7]
