In 1861, James was only just born and his young parents were living in Edenbridge Road, East Grinstead, Sussex.[1]
In 1871, James was 10 and living with his widowed father in Edenbridge in the subdistrict of Penhurst. His father was a grocer and he had four small children to care for.[2]

He married Eliza Ellen Smith on 21 September 1884 in Croyden, Surrey, England.[3]
