James was born in 1715. He passed away in 1795. The only surviving son of Thomas King of Kirkby Malham, Yorkshire where the family had lived since Rev. Robert King was Minister there in 1573. This was after the Rising of the North in1569 where Catholic Nobles from Northern England tried, unsuccessfully, to depose Elizabeth I and replace her with Mary Queen of Scots.
Canon of Windsor 1774-1776. Dean of Raphoe 1776-1795.
He was friendly with Edmund Burke (MP) who he kept in touch with Irish affairs in the run up to the Catholic Relief Acts of 1778 and 1791 and in the appointment of Lord Fitzwilliam as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in August 1794. He shared Burke's hope for Catholic emancipation in Ireland but this was dashed when Fitzwilliam was recalled in February 1795.
