Biography

King, Muriel Ethel [1906], Christian/Protestant, Primary School & KindergartenTeacher/Home Duties, * 56 Whitby St., West Brunswick, Victoria. 24/10/1906, ~ West Brunswick., + Strath-Haven Home for Aged, Bendigo. 28/07/2003, [] Bendigo Lawn Cemetery [L6, 47860] 31/07/2003 Born and bred a Methodist. Named Ethel after her paternal aunt. Moved from West Brunswick to 'Shoreline'-Mordialloc at about 6 yrs old, due to sister, Eleanor Joyce being diagnosed as "delicate" & needing of 'Sea Air' Muriel Ethel & her family later moved to 250 Grange Road Ormond to their new house built by her uncle, William Henry King. She trained as a Primary Teacher in several Melbourne State Schools and Melbourne Teacher's College, Parkville. In 1928 she went to Fiji as a Kindergarten Teacher at Dilkusha [Methodist Church Orphanage for Indian girls] but returned to Melbourne for her sister, Elsie Blanche's wedding in April 1930. Met William Lunt in c.1928 at Glenhuntly Methodist Church, she "in choir had a good view of congregation & liked the look of him". He later joined Young People's Guild & once offered to take her home on his motor-bike & side-car but she declined saying she preferred to walk, [real reason for refusal was a boil, the only one she ever had.] Occupation at time of marriage=State School Teacher. After marriage they lived at 41 Aberdeen St. Essendon as William was employed at Commonwealth Ordnance Factory, Maribynong, until 23 January 1943 when the family moved to 22 [now 19] Condon Street Bendigo due to his promotion at Commonwealth Govt. Ordnance Factory. She was active in life of the Glenhuntly, Aberfeldie & Kennington Methodist Churches as well as Free Kindergartens in the Bendigo area, being Directress of several. She was made a Life Member of the Bendigo East Bowling Club due to her services to the Club, was Club Champion as well as holding various offices of the Club. She knitted, crocheted & later took up china painting, tapestry. All her family have samples of her work. Muriel was a very devoted mother, grandmother & great grandmother, interested in all activities of her own family as well as her extended family. She lived at 19 Condon Street for the rest of her married life only selling the house nine years after William's death to move to the Uniting Church Strath- Haven Homes for the Aged, Condon Street Bendigo in August 1995.
