Biography

Nellie Gladys Kimes was born the 26th of November, 1899 in Crawford County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of George Wesley Nordin and Elizabeth Jane Kimes. She was told her parents were engaged to be married when her father was killed in a railroad accident but this was untrue. George Nordin did work for the railroad for many years. He married Alice Lee in 1907 and he died in 1936 in Oklahoma. Her mother was single when she was born and she was raised by her maternal grandparents, Francis Marion Kimes and Louisa Adeline Elkins where she was enumerated in 1900 ^[1] and in 1910. ^[2] Her mother married William Elijah Moore in 1904 and they had three daughters: Ada, Ava, and Opal Moore.

Gladys married 1) Claude William Smalley the 3rd of November, 1917 in Crawford County, Arkansas.^[3] They lived in Crawford County, Arkansas in 1920 ^[4] and by 1930 were in Columbus, Cherokee, Kansas.^[5] In 1940 they lived in Kirkwood, Crawford, Kansas, United States.^[6]

Gladys and William had eleven children before their divorce. She then married 2) Oscar Berg 15 June 1954 in California. He was born in Arkansas. Oscar and Gladys had no children. Oscar died the 15 December, 1978 in Shasta County, California. She died the 21st of November, 1988 in Redding, Shasta County, California^[7][8] and was buried in Whiskeytown Cemetery, Whiskeytown, Shasta, California. ^[9]

She corresponded with Virginia Pierce the last ten years of her life supplying much information about the Kimes family. She did the corrections on the Kimes Cemetery List that Dale Cradduck compiled the 28th of January, 1976. She always went by the name of Kimes until her first marriage.

Gladys was mentioned in the obituary of her another person on 9 February 1958 in Greensboro, North Carolina.^[10]

Kimes's son Otto Lavern Smalley died on 11 January 1987 in Shasta, California, United States.^[11]
