John Abraham Kimes was born on 6 October 1883 in Rudy Township, Crawford, Arkansas, United States, son of Hiram Nelson Kimes (1850–1921) and Margaret Clementine Reed (1850–1920).

John (19) married Adelia Morgan (19) (born on 4 November 1883 in Arkansas, United States; daughter of John Dillon Morgan and Sarah Alabama Johnston) on 14 June 1903 in Crawford, Arkansas, United States.[2] Their children were:
