Margaret Wambui Kenyatta was Mayor of Nairobi and served as Kenya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.^[1]

Margaret Rose Wambui Kenyatta was born on 16 Feb 1928 in Nairobi, Kenya. She is the daughter of Kenya's first president, Jomo wa Muigai and his first wife, Grace Wahu.^[1][2]

Margaret grew up in the family home in Gichungo, near Dagoretti Children's Centre in Nairobi. She joined formal school when she was ten years old, as was typical for her generation. She and another girl passed their primary school with high marks, and the local high school had no choice but to accept the girls who were the first to enroll.^[1]

After she graduated in 1949, Margaret taught at Kenya Teacher's Training College, and took other positions, eventually becoming active in political life as influenced by her father.^[1]

Margaret was elected as a Councillor for Dagoretti Ward in Nairobi in 1963 and was subsequently re-elected for four subsequent terms. Margaret was elected as the deputy Mayor of Nairobi in 1969 and as the Mayor of Nairobi for two terms from 1970 to 1976, becoming the first African woman to become the mayor of Kenya's capital city and the second African woman mayor in Kenya.^[1] She also served as Kenya's ambassador to the Nairobi-based United Nations Environment Programme for 10 years between 1976 and 1986. She was the first woman in Kenya to serve as ambassador.^[3] From 1992 until she retired in 2002, she was member of the Electoral Commission of Kenya.^[1]

When her mother died in 2007, Margaret was her only living next of kin. However she was not well enough to take over her mother's estate, and as her only son Patrick John Kamau had also died, her daughter-in-law Emily Wanjiku Kamau and eldest grandson Njomo Kamau applied to be the estate administrators.^[4]

She died on 5 April 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.^[1]
