Biography
Sophia Kennedy was born August 30, 1869 in East Nissouri Township, Oxford, Ontario to John Kennedy (1823-1901) and Nancy (Snetsinger) Kennedy (abt.1827-abt.1886).[1][2] Sophia was the fifth of five daughters born to her farming parents. By the time of her first census in 1871 the family had changed her name to Grace Christena.[3] (See research notes.)
In 1871 the family was farming in East Nissouri Township, their household included John Kennedy (47), Nancy (44), Janet (13), Mary (11), Isabella (9), Nancy (6), and Grace (1).[3]
Ten years later Grace (11) and Nancy (16) were attending school. The older girls, Janet (23), Mary (21), and Isabella (19) were no longer in school and their father was farming.[4]
In 1891 Grace (20) and Nancy (22) were the only children living at home with their father John (68).[5] John was still farming, but he was now a widower as Nancy had died in 1889.[6]
On April 14, 1897 Grace married Aaron Knox (1869-1940), a local farmer and the brother of her sister Nancy's husband. Nancy and her husband John Knox were witnesses at Grace's wedding[7] in Thamesford.[8]
Two years later, on May 31, 1899 their first child Frankie Knox (1899-1899) was born.[9][10] However Frankie only lived a few days and died on June 3. The family was living at Lot 2 Concession 10.[11]
In 1901 Aaron (32) and Grace (31) were living in East Nissouri township and Aaron was working as a labourer on the railroad. He attended the Methodist Church while Grace attended the Presbyterian Church.[2]
September 14, 1903 their second child Nancy Gladys (Knox) Hutchison (1903-1962) was born in Thamesford, East Nissouri. They were living at Lot 36 Concession 13.[12] Another daughter, Belle Kennedy Knox (1911-1911), was born to Grace and Aaron on May 13, 1911. Belle was born in the hospital in East Zorra. The family had moved to the Woodstock area, farming at E1/2 Lot 1 Concession 9.[13]
Later that year the census showed the family farming in the East Zorra township. Their household consisted of Aaron (42), Grace (41), their niece Myrtle (13), Gladys (7), and Belle (1 month).[14] Myrtle may have been living with them to help with the new baby.
Sadly, Belle developed spina bifida. She died in the St. Joseph's Hospital in London, Ontario on December 28, 1911.[15]
In 1914, in Woodstock, a third daughter, Margaret (Knox) Miller was born to Grace and Aaron.[8]
In 1921 the family was living at 58 Broadway St. in Woodstock, Ontario. Aaron (52) was working as a drayman, while Grace (51) was home with their two daughters Nancy (17) and Margaret (7).[16]
Four years later Nancy Gladys married Lloyd Lynch and moved from the family home.[17]
In 1931 Grace, Aaron, and Margaret were living at 58 Broadway St. in Woodstock. Aaron was working as a trucker for the textile mill, Grace was a homemaker and Margaret was attending school.[18]
In October, 1938 Margaret was married, leaving just Grace and Aaron in their home.[19] On May 14, 1940 Grace became a grandmother when Margaret had her first child.[20]
Just a few weeks later Grace was widowed on June 19.[21] Grace died on September 14, 1940 at home in Woodstock. She died of hypertension and heart disease after just turning 71 years old. She was buried in Kintore, Ontario.[22]
Research Notes
The birth record for Sophia is very clearly for August 30, 1869. The birthdate provided for Grace on the 1901 census very clearly states that same date.[2] As there is no other child born to those parents on the same day in the record it cannot be a case of twins. Grace must be the same person as Sophia. As well, in all census records for the Kennedy family there is no Sophia, just Grace. Therefore it can be assumed the family changed Sophia's name to Grace.Schweger-2 05:45, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
