John married Mary Elizabeth (Berry) Kelley, the daughter of Doctor Morgan "Doc" Berry and Mary Elizabeth Pearson, marrying in Wayne County, Tennessee on October 20, 1887[3] and having nine children known children together:

They set off west, farming for a time in Brinton, Oklahoma[4] and residing in 1910 in Moore, Oklahoma, where John worked as a stone mason while his wife managed the farm.[5] They continued west, settling in 1920 in El Centro, California, in Imperial County, where John worked as a rancher.[6] In 1930, John worked as a poultry farmer , residing in Ontario Township, California, in San Bernardino County.[7]
John Kelley passed away in Compton Township, California[8] at the age of 75.
