WILL OF GEORGE KEELING (JR); FOUND IN HALIFAX COUNTY WILLS, 1759-1774, VOL. 1, PG 1. NOTE: Halifax Co. formed from Edgecombe Co. NC in 1758, so in 1759 when George died, this is where will would have been filed. Also Granville Co. NC was formed from Edgecombe Co. in 1746. Edgecombe was originally Glasgow Co. NC.

In the name of God Amen, I GEORGE KEELING (JR) of Halifax County being very sick and weak, but of a sound mind and memory blessed be God, for the same knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die and also to come to Judgment. My body I give to be buried according to the discretion of my Executors, hereafter mentioned, and my soul to him that gave it. And as for my small worldly Estate that God hath been pleased to give me, I dispose as followeth.

Item. I give to my son JOHN KEELING one Negro fellow named Jerry and a Negro boy named Dick......Item. I give to my daughter ELIZABETH KEELING one Negro fellow named Frank & a negro woman named Agge and her child Ben with her whole increase hereafter......Item I give to ANN KEELING one shilling sterling. ...Item I give to FRANCES KEELING one shilling sterling. Item I give to AGATHA KEELING one shilling sterling. Lastly I appoint Thos B and James Smith whole executors of this my last will & testament revoking all former Wills whatsoever. As witness my hand and seal this ninth day of June Anno Dom 1759....signed GEORGE KEELING. Test...Abner Andrews, Absolom Rogers, jurat, John Rhodes

Halifax September Court 1759 ....This will was in Open Court duly exhibited by the Executor the oath of Absalom Rogers one of the subscribing witnesses and then James Smyth the Executors therein named appeared in Court and was qualified for that office. Ordered the said will be recorded.

This will names all of George Keeling Jr's children but does not mention Agnes, his wife. She is known to still be alive because she remarried shortly after his death in 1759 to Judge John Williams of Williamsboro, NC and Montepellier. George Keeling Jr. wrote his will in June of 1759 and it was proven by September 1759, so he died sometime in between these dates. I have seen a reference to his home being called "Nine Oaks" in Granville Co. The home has since been demolished as of 2015..

Wendy, I found that will on Familysearch.org. What is interesting is that he names his son John, and his daughter Elizabeth, but then does not show any relation for Frances and Agatha, and leaves each only one shilling.

I think that Agatha was perhaps referring to his wife because I found in the probate file guardianship records only for John and Elizabeth, orphans of George Keeling. image 1766 of 1986, citing Elizabeth Keeling orphan. image 1768 of 1986, citing John Keeling orphan

Some descendants claim Agatha was divorced from George, and Agatha married John Williams. With that in mind, in the probate file there is an Inventory of the Estate of the Orphans of George Keeling, dated November 16th 1757 and signed by Williams Junior. On that Inventory, Elizabeth received three Negroes, Frank, Agge, and Ben; and John received two named Jerry and Dick. These are the exact names in the will. image 1764 of 1986, citing Inventory of the Estate of Orphans, Elizabeth and John.

What I am leading up to is that Agatha Keeling Williams' daughter, Agatha, was not George Keeling's daughter, but John Williams. The year 1757 plainly written on that Inventory suggests that Agatha had married John Williams, and that when they married a trust had been set aside for John and Elisabeth. Also, Agatha's, the daughter, marriage record to Robert Burton recorded the name Agatha Williams. Let me know if you or others agree or disagree with my conclusion after reviewing those probate documents.
