William Christopher Kearney was born on 29 May 1902 at Spring Garden Alley, Waterford City, Ireland. [1][2][3] He is the seventh and youngest child of James Kearney (a painter and glazier) and Margaret Connors. His middle name - Christopher - was given after a brother who died a few years earlier as an infant.
Sadly, William too was destined to die as an infant. He developed "capillary bronchitis" toward the end of 1902 and 42 days later, at the age of 8 months, he died from exhaustion on 25 Jan 1903 at his home in Spring Garden Alley. [4][5] His father died two months later from TB.
