Biography

Albert Roswell Kays was born on May 3, 1888, in Magnolia, Illinois, to John Austin Kays and Mary Alice Hartenbower. He had five siblings: Victor Cicero, Lois L., Donald Jackson, Mark Ethelbert, and Lora Grace. He graduated from Henry High School in 1906 and later attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College (now Northern Illinois University) and the College of Agriculture in New Mexico. He married Zola May Sturtz in Henry, Illinois, in 1916, and they had one daughter, Shirley.

He enlisted in World War I and was commissioned a lieutenant in the Second camp at Fort Sheridan in November 1917. He served in the United States Army with H Company of the 336th Infantry of the 84th Division and overseas with H Company, 114th Infantry, 29th Division. After his discharge he worked for various glove companies in Illinois, Tennessee, and Indiana. He was a past commander of Post 31, American Legion and a member of the Post Commanders Club. He was also a member of the 29th Division Association and past state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Illinois.

He died on April 26, 1964, in Kewanee, Illinois, at the age of 75, and was buried there.
