Alexander was born in 1910, the son of George Kane, a sailor, and Jenny Niblock. His birth was registered by his mother "Jennie".[1]
During the 1911 Census of Ireland, Alexander aged 4 months was residing in a house 14 in Mullaghdoo (Island Magee, Antrim) with his mother. His father was likely at sea.[2][3]

In loving memory of Jennie, beloved wife of George Kane who died 7th May, 1918 aged 26 years. Their son George died 13th April 1916 aged 11 months. Their son Alexander W. Kane, Master Mariner who died 6th July 1985 aged 74 years. And his wife Norah Patricia Hadden who died 6th July 1994 aged 80 years.
