Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Elizabeth Jump was born in about 1779 in Leigoth(?), Lancashire.

Elizabeth married William Swift on 28 Apr 1806 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Neither had been married before, and both lived in Eccleston. William was a husbandman. The witnesses were James Lyon and James Bradshaw.

Their daughter Ann Mary Swift was born on 18 Oct 1806 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

Their daughter Ellen was born in about 1810 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1812; she died on 27 September 1819, aged 7, and was buried in Windleshaw Chantry.

Their presumed son Thomas was born in about 1817 in Lancashire, probably in Eccleston.

Their son Henry was born in about 1819 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

Their presumed son Peter was born in about 1825 in Lancashire, probably in Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Eccleston. William was working as a labourer, as were Thomas and Henry.

William died in 1850 in Prescot district, aged 77.

By March 30th 1851, the family was living in Kill Houses, Eccleston. Besides Elizabeth, the household contained her son Henry - an agricultural labourer - and her daughter Ellen; Elizabeth's grandson Roger Eccleston (Ann Mary's son) was also in the household on census night.

Elizabeth died in 1854 in Prescot district, aged 75.

Research Notes

Another couple named William and Elizabeth Swift married in January 1809 in the St Helens area, so although there are christenings of Swift children of William and Elizabeth between 1810 and 1824 listed on Lancashire OPC website, they may belong to the other couple.

Ann Mary is definitely their child, because her son Roger Eccleston is with his grandmother Elizabeth Swift in 1851.
