Captain Henry Jones Died in Service during World War I.
Birth and Parents
Henry John Rutherford Jones was born in 1866 in the registration district of Hackney, Middlesex, England. He was the only child born to Susannah (Rutherford) and her husband Robert Slade Jones.[1] Both his parents came from families which were active in non-conformist congregational churches.
Childhood and School
His parents marriage ended very early in Henry's life. His mother was granted a judicial separation in 1869, and a divorce in May 1871.[2]
The 1871 census a few weeks earlier had recorded Henry and his mother in the household of her widowed uncle John Rumbal in Upper Clapton. The household also included an unmarried cousin, a general servant and a nurse for four year old Henry. This was probably a mutually beneficial arrangement in which Susanna Jones was running the home for John Rumbal, whose daughter was away at school.[3]
A decade later, Henry was 14 and was himself away at school. He was a pupil at Padcroft College in the village of Hillingdon, near Uxbridge, Middlesex, and his name is recorded on this census return as Harry J R Jones.[4]
Medical Qualifications and Career
After John Rumbal's death, Henry's mother remained in Upper Clapton, living with his daughter, Susanna Rumbal, and this is where the 1891 census recorded 24 year old Henry Jones also. He was described as a General Medical Pracitioner on this return, and the household again kept two servants, this time a cook and a housemaid.[5]
Henry was studying at the London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London, where he had gained his LSA degree and registration as a doctor in 1890. He would go on to become a Surgeon, adding the qualifications M.R.C.S., and L.R.C.P. in 1892, and later worked as a House Surgeon at the Poplar Hospital for Accidents, in the London's East End.[6]
His mother died in September 1897. Probate was granted to Henry John Rutherford Jones, Surgeon, and Susanna Rumbal the following January. [7]
Marriage
Henry John Rutherford Jones married widow Lilian Kate Archer at the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter and St. Edward, Westminster in August 1900.[8]
The couple were living in Wandsworth, Surrey when the 1901 census was taken. Henry J Rutherford Jones was described as a Surgeon and Physician, and their household included three servants, a cook, housemaid and parlourmaid.[9] Henry's step-daughter Adelaide Archer was at school not far away in Putney.[10]
When the 1911 census was taken, Henry and Lilian, by then in their 40s, were on holiday with 24 year old Adelaide, staying at the Branksome Tower Hotel, which was situated in 9 acres of grounds on the cliffs at Poole, Dorset, and also had its own access to the seashore.[11][12]
First World War
Henry served in the Royal Army Medical Corps from the outset of the war, receiving his commission as a Lieutenant in 1914. He was promoted in the field to the rank of Captain in August 1915.[6]
Captain Henry John Rutherford Jones of the Royal Army Medical Corps was 49 when he died on active service on 26th February, 1916.[6] His death occurred in Kensington registration district, Middlesex[13] and he was buried at Hanwell Cemetery, where there is a memorial.[14]
Research Notes
Non-conformist churches: uncle Thomas Slade Jones was a Congregational Minister. Great-grandfather John Rumbal had been a founding member of Upper Clapton Congregational Chapel, and grandparents Henry Knightland Rutherford and Susan (Rumbal) Rutherford were active in the same chapel. His parents' marriage had been announced in non-conformist newspapers.
Lilian's first husband, Jacque Jerome Archer had died in 1899, in India[15] where Adelaide Archer had been born. Administration of his estate was in England.[16]
1911 Census transcription records Henry and Lillian's last name as Walker rather than Jones, but all other details are correct.
Adelaide Gwendoline Archer was executor of Lilian Kate Rutherford Jones' will.
